UTB/TSC won two scrimmage baseball games over Laredo Community College, 14-11 and 4-2, Sunday at Scorpion Field in the final preparation games for the Scorpions before the start of the regular season Thursday.

 

The Scorpions won all four scrimmage games over the Palominos. On Saturday, UTB/TSC won both games by scores of 4-0 and 4-3.

  

UTB/TSC opens the regular season with a four-game series against Doane College (Neb.) Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 26-28. Opening Day 2012 will be held at 6 p.m. when the Scorpions and Tigers start their series.

 

Scorpions 14, Palominos 11 (first game)

In the only wild game of the series, UTB/TSC saw a 6-0 lead disappear as LCC scored six in the fifth inning to tie the game, 6-6. The Scorpions responded with eight runs in the next two innings to take a 14-6 lead that shrunk to the final 14-11 margin in the seventh inning. UTB/TSC used five pitchers.

 

Matt Ginn went 3-for-3 with two doubles, driving in two runs. Kyle Douglass had a three-run double in the third inning and a two-run single in the fifth inning for five RBI. Zach Cordia and Robert J. Garza each had two hits and Juan Munoz blasted a solo homer. Douglass and K.J. Semien each scored twice.

 

Scorpions 4, Palominos 2 (second game)

Three Scorpion pitchers combined to hold LCC to five hits. Mitch Schaafsma allowed one run in the first four innings, Austin Bickerton allowed one in the next two innings, and Brody Chamberlain pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

 

Colby Henscey provided the offensive spark with a two-run homer and triple. His homer in the first inning went about 420 feet over the center field wall, scoring Robert J. Garza, who had singled. Garza, who also had two hits, drove in a run in the fourth inning. The Scorpions had six hits.
