In the most competitive golf tournament the NAIA had to offer over the weekend the UTB and TSC Men's Golf team had an outstanding first day and settled on the second day to finish in ninth place in the fifteen-team field at the Northwood Fall Shootout in Grand Prairie, Texas at the Tangle Ridge Golf Course.
On a frigid morning with frost on the ground the men's team worked with the conditions and managed to finish the initial two rounds in second place after day one.
As a team on day one UTB and TSC shot a score of 289.
"Very pleased with the way they played on Monday especially in the first round." said UTB and TSC head coach Anthony Lopez. "It was a long day for the guys being on their feet all day but they stayed determined and focused for a majority of the day."
On Monday they men's team was led by Alberto Castillo shooting a 1st round score of 70 and Marcus Cavazos shooting a 1st and 2nd round score of 72 respectively.
"What the guys need to take from day one is the fact that they can shoot good rounds and beat good teams." said Lopez.
The second day of the tournament did not turn out the way UTB and TSC had hoped. Cavazos once again was in the thick of things shooting two over par to end with a course score of 74. Gage Murphy emerged on day two to record the lowest team score of 73.
"Day two did not go quite as planned. We played well in spurts but weren't able to finish off and put a solid team score together." said Lopez. "I'm proud of the guys for working hard and giving it their best. I'm especially proud of Marcus and Gage for hanging tough and shooting good scores on the final day."
The Northwood Shootout is the last tournament of the men's team for the fall semester. They will be back on the links in February for the spring season.
