During a year filled with spectacular highlights on the playing field UTB/TSC's student athletes gave a strong performance in the classroom as well. Thirty-five athletes have been named to the Scorpion Athletics Honor Roll for the spring 2009 semester for achieving grade point averages of 3.0 or higher for the semester.

The 35 students represent 38 percent of student-athletes. Seventy-one percent of the men's golf team had 3.0 GPAs or higher, the highest percentage of the six team sports.

Four student-athletes earned 4.0 GPAs for the semester - Pamela Lopez from women's golf, Robby Mang from baseball and Fernando Mendoza and Mario Zamora from men's soccer. Zamora also had a 4.0 average for the Fall 2008 semester.
 
"We are very proud of the hard work and dedication all of our student athletes have displayed this past year," Associate Vice President of Student Affairs Vince Solis said. "Their commitment to excellence on and off the field has also translated to great success in the classroom. Together with the athletic staff, they make wonderful ambassadors not only of their respective sports, but also of the broad range of academic majors they represent." 
 
Named to the honor roll were

Baseball (9): Sam Buchanan, Jorge Camorlinga, Ignacio Celedon, Daniel Garcia, Peter Maldonado, Robby Mang, Dennis Ortiz, David Pittman, Jacob Yousif.

Men's Soccer (5): Juan Gamboa, Brian Hardie, Fernando Mendoza, Juan Nava, Mario Zamora.

Women's Soccer (8): Theresa Berman, Linette Cuvillier, Julia Dell'Aquila, Sara DiBenedetto, Jessica Hamer, Samantha Thorman, Helen Wagstaff, Aimee Young.

Men's Golf (5): Victor Calzada, Brock Crosson, Mathew Mah, Chris Milligan, Anthony Milligan.

Women's Golf (3): April Martinez, Allison Valles, Pamela Lopez.

Volleyball (5): Belinda Carreon, Talita Milasauskas, Amanda Ozuna, Jacque Touchet and Katie Japp.

Japp, who graduated from UTB/TSC in the spring, is a two-time Daktronics NAIA Scholar Athlete recipient (2007, 2008).
