The UTB/TSC baseball team added a new member to its ranks as infielder A.J. Gomez signed a Red River Conference Letter of Intent to play for the Scorpions during a signing ceremony Wednesday at the Garza Gymnasium Annex on UTB/TSC campus.

Gomez is a senior from United High School in Laredo. He finished the 2009 season with a .432 batting average. Gomez also had 38 hits for the year with 11 RBIs and three homeruns.

"We are real excited A.J. decided to become a Scorpion," UTB/TSC head baseball coach Bryan Aughney said. "He has the winning mentality that we are building here at UTB. I look forward to watching him mature as a young man in the years he will spend here with us."

Last season Gomez helped the United Longhorns baseball team to a 27-6 record and a berth in the state playoffs before a loss to Austin Westlake in the fourth round. In 2009 United went 8-0 at home and 13-1 in District 29-5A play.

"He had an outstanding career at Laredo United, one of the most successful teams from South Texas the last few years," Aughney said. "That was a big draw for us."
