Question: How could a team go undefeated during a season and not win the national championship?
Answer: When the team ties another team, which goes down in the record books as a tie, and then falls short on penalty kicks.
That's exactly what happened to the UTB/TSC men's soccer team in 2009.
The Scorpions started the season 5-0, then tied Belhaven College on a neutrral field in Mobile, Ala. Because the game was not a conference game, it did not go into overtime. UTB/TSC then won its final 12 matches of the regular season to advance to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round with a 17-0-1 record.
UTB/TSC tied Biola University in the Opening Round, 2-2, but Biola advanced to the Second Round by virtue of a 4-3 advantage on penalty kicks. Thus, the Scorpions finished 18-0-2.
UTB/TSC was the only team to finish the season undefeated. No women's team finished 2009 without a loss.
