LAGUNA VISTA -- Despite higher scores because of morning fog and windy conditions, the UTB/TSC men's golf team captured first place in the 11th Annual Sen. Eddie Lucio Collegiate Invitational Golf Tournament Monday at the South Padre Island Golf Club.

The Scorpions finished with a team score of 310 Monday after an opening round 293 for a 603 total in the six-team field. Trinity University finished second at 613, Our Lady of the Lake University third at 614 and University of the Southwest fourth at 617. Photo Gallery!

UTB/TSC's "B" team finished fifth with a 656 score and Texas A&M International University rounded out the field with a 676 score.

Brock Crosson, who was one shot out of the individual medalist lead after the first day Sunday, finished two shots behind medalist Aaron Flores of OLLU. Flores finished with a 142 score, firing a 73 Monday after an opening-round score of 69.

Crosson and Flores were playing together in the leading threesome and waged a tight battle throughout the day. Crosson had a 35 on the front nine and Flores a 38, giving Crosson a two-shot lead. When the two golfers each shot 4-4-3-5-5 on the first five holes of the back nine, Crosson still led by two shots.

However, Flores finished the final four holes with a par-birdie-birdie-par while Crosson shot bogey-bogey-birdie-bogey, and Flores took home the medalist plaque.

UTB/TSC grabbed the team trophy with a stronger supporting cast led by its seniors. Crosson, Chris Milligan and Victor Calzada, the three seniors on the team, had rounds of 74, 77 and 79 respectively on Monday. Crosson finished with 144, Milligan 152 and Calzada 155.

Freshman Matt Cadriel shot a 161 and freshman Marcus Cavazos a 162 that did not count toward the team total.

Vince Cavazos equaled the best round Monday with a 72 to go with Sunday's 80 for a 152 total to lead the "B" team. Joseph Lucio and Anthony Milligan each shot 161, and Jeff Hoover finished with a 182.

The tournament was delayed about 30 minutes by a thick morning fog, and conditions were windy throughout the day.

The Scorpions next compete in the Schreiner University Invitational March 1-2 in Kerrville.
