ROUND ROCK -- Concordia University-Texas came back from a 4-0 deficit to overtake UTB/TSC and held on for a 6-5 victory in the first game, then cruised to a 8-5 win in the second game of their doubleheader Wednesday at Dell Diamond.
 
The Scorpions return home with a record of 8-14 while the Tornados, members of NCAA Division III, are now 6-6.
 
The two teams played at Dell Diamond, home of the Round Rock Express, the Class AAA affiliate of the Houston Astros. The stadium seats 11,000 people.
 
"We started out both games with a bang, but couldn''t finish," Scorpion head coach Bryan Aughney said. "We're scoring runs early, but we totally get away from it."
 
UTB/TSC next plays at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi March 9 in the finale of a 15-game stretch of road games.
 
The loss in the first game was the third straight loss in which UTB/TSC lost a four-run lead late in the game. Against Prairie View A&M University February 26, the Scorpions held a 4-0 lead after six innings only to lose, 5-4. Against University of Texas-Pan American February 28, the Scorpions held a 9-5 lead in the top of the fifth only to lose, 13-9.
 
The loss in the opener was the seventh one-run defeat of the year for the Scorpions.
 
Concordia 6, Scorpions 5 (first game)
UTB/TSC scored three runs in the first inning, highlighted by Gus Henggeler's two-run single, and added one more in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead.
 
Scorpion junior pitcher Danny Gidora breezed through the first three innings without allowing a hit. Concordia scored a run in the fourth inning to make it 4-1 and three in the fifth to tie the game 4-4.
 
The Tornados scratched out two more runs in the bottom of the sixth of the seven-inning game to take a 6-4 lead. UTB/TSC scored in the top of the seventh to cut the margin to 6-5.
 
Henggeler went 4-for-4 and Peter Maldonado went 3-for-3 for the Scorpions, who had 12 hits. Matt Ginn went 2-for-4.
 
Gidora went six innings, allowed nine hits, struck out four and walked two.
  
Concordia 8, Scorpions 5 (second game)
UTB/TSC had early leads of 2-0 and 4-2, only to see Concordia come back for a four-run third inning that put the Tornados ahead, 6-4. Concordia tallied single runs in the fifth and sixth innings for an 8-4 lead before the Scorpions added a single run in the top of the seventh.
 
The Scorpions managed only five hits off four Tornado pitchers. The highlight for the Scorpions was a two-run line drive home run by Matt Ginn in the third inning. Ginn now has a six-game hitting streak.
 
Keith Hernandez was the starting and losing pitcher for the Scorpions. Daniel Garcia and Sam Buchanan relieved for UTB/TSC.
