UTB/TSC faculty, staff and students are encouraged to wear pink Tuesday in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Day when the Scorpion baseball team hosts Texas A&M International University at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 6.

In the "Scorpions Fight Back Against Breast Cancer" game, UTB/TSC players will wear pink shirts as their uniform tops in honor of victims of breast cancer. The Scorpion shirts will also be sold, with proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Baseball for the Cure campaign.

The same pink shirts the Scorpions will be wearing will also be sold at the game, along with other breast cancer awareness materials.

Debbie Abrego-Medina, administrative assistant to Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Hilda Silva, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Joining her will be 85-year-old breast cancer survivor Vangie Henggeler, grandmother of Scorpion catcher Gus Henggeler. Abrego-Medina is undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Also joining in the efforts for breast cancer awareness are the Brownsville Sisters in Pink and representatives of the Texas Oncology Center Brownsville and Harlingen offices, who will distribute breast cancer literature.

The day's activities were the idea of Scorpion head coach Bryan Aughney, who lost his mother to breast cancer in 2000.

"The cancer took her life when I was 18 after my senior year of high school graduation," Aughney said. "It's very near and dear in my heart and as many people across the country. This is definitely something we want to get awareness out there for."

The pink t-shirts the Scorpions will be wearing are for sale now for $7 each at the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, located in the Old Education Building. For more information, contact Melissa de la Rosa at (956) 882-5134 or by email at melissa.delarosa@utb.edu.
