AUSTIN -- After its bats were relatively silenced in a 9-5 loss, UTB/TSC's offense exploded again in a 14-4 win over Huston-Tillotson University in a split of their Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday at Downs Field.
The Scorpions are now 21-17 overall and 4-2 in RRAC games. HTU is 9-20 overall and 2-4 in the RRAC.
Brian Bustos had another big day for the Scorpions. He went 1-for-3 with a solo homer in the first game, and went 3-for-5 with another solo homer in the second game, driving in five runs.
In the three-game series, Bustos finished with nine hits in 13 at bats, driving in 13 runs and scoring six times. He homered in each of the three games in the series and now has five homers for the season. With the offensive output, Bustos has raised his batting average to .315.
"Overall when you take two out of three on the road, you should be happy," Scorpion head coach Bryan Aughney said. "But we didn't show up in the early game. We did not pitch well or play good defense and did not make adjustments early enough with their starting pitcher."
The two games had striking contrasts.
"It was like night and day compared to the second game," Aughney said. "We hit the ball well, and made defensive plays. We have to learn that no matter how well you play one day, the next game starts off at 0-0 and you have make the plays again and hit the ball well again."
The Scorpions will now be home for their next four games, which will be the final home appearances of the year. They host Texas A&M International University in "Breast Cancer Awareness Night" at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Scorpion Field. They will then be home for their only conference series of the season against Jarvis Christian College Friday and Saturday.
Huston-Tillotson 9, Scorpions 5 (first game)
UTB/TSC dug itself in a big hole, and trailed after four innings, 8-0. The Scorpions cut the lead to 8-3 in the fifth but could not make a comeback rally. Three errors, the most the Scorpions have committed since February, led to five unearned runs.
Kevin Chapman (3-3) was the victim of the defensive lapses. He allowed four earned runs and nine hits in five innings, striking out two. Sam Buchanan pitched the final seventh inning.
The Scorpions had seven hits, two by Jeff Allen. Bustos had his solo homer to lead off the fifth inning.
Scorpions 14, Huston-Tillotson 4 (second game, 7 innings)
The big bats came out quickly this time. The Scorpions scored three in the first inning and had a 7-3 lead after four innings. A six-run eruption put the Scorpions on top, 13-3, and UTB/TSC finished off the game in the seventh inning of the scheduled nine-inning game with a 10-run lead.
UTB/TSC had 17 hits in the game, marking the fourth time in the last five games that the Scorpions have collected at least 16 hits in a game.
Bustos' hot hitting continued. He went to the plate five times and drove in a run each time. He hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning, a solo homer in the third, reached on an error that drove in a teammate in the fourth, and had run-scoring singles in the fifth and seventh innings.
His day finished with the line of 3-for-4, driving in five runs and scoring twice.
Other Scorpions had big days as well. Walter Blume blasted a two-run homer, his second of the year. Jorge Camorlinga went 3-for-5, and scored three times. Peter Maldonado had two hits and scored three times, while Blume and Gilbert Puente also had two hits each. Miguel Garcia scored twice.
Chris Raley came into the game in the fourth inning in relief of starter Matt Leffler to gain the victory. He pitched three innings, striking out four without walking a batter. Leffler pitched the first three innings and Adam Vera pitched the seventh.
