EDMOND, Okla. -- There was good and bad news for the UTB/TSC women's golf team after the first round of the NAIA Unaffiliated Group #2 Tournament at the River Oaks Golf Club.

The Scorpion women were in second place in the seven-team field, but the team's 393 score trailed tournament leader Northwood University by 66 strokes.

Northwood, the defending conference champion, shot a round of 327, led by tournament leader Tia Cox, who shot a 78.

Leading the Scorpions in the first round was Andrea Cadriel with a 90, followed by Krystal Garza at 95, Larissa Loredo at 100 and Cat Lira at 108. Pamela Lopez' score of 112 did not count toward the team total.

"Northwood is a solid team," Scorpion head coach Bob Lucio said. "There is a big difference between us experience-wise."

Participating in the tournament are the Scorpions and Northwood from the RRAC, and Kansas Wesleyan University (Kan.), Ottawa University (Kan.) and Southwestern College (Kan.) from the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, and Central Christian College (Kan.) and Peru State College (Neb.) from the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The winning team advances to the NAIA National Women's Golf Championships May 25-28 in Rapid City, S.D. The top individual, if not on the winning team, will also advance to nationals.

A shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday will signal the start of the final 18 holes of the tournament.
