FORT WORTH -- Chris Raley saved his best game of the season for the playoffs as UTB/TSC defeated Wiley College, 5-0, in a Red River Athletic Conference Tournament opening round game at Sycamore Park Saturday.

Raley was outstanding for the Scorpions, putting in seven strong innings. He allowed four hits, striking out six while walking two. Raley threw 92 pitches, 58 strikes and 34 balls, to improve his record to 5-2.

The Scorpions now advance to the second round of the six-team double-elimination tournament and will face Bacone College at 1 p.m. Sunday at LaGrave Field. Live Stats!

The Scorpions came into the tournament seeded fourth in the tournament, after finishing in second place in the RRAC South Division with a 7-5 record. Wiley was the South Division champ and the tournament's No. 3 seed.

"Chris pitched his rear end off," Scorpion head coach Bryan Aughney said. "He knew he was going to get the start when we found out that we were going to play Wiley and he prepared well. He really threw a gem. We scored some runs early and played real solid defense."

Raley prepared well for Wiley after facing them in the regular season two weeks ago. "I knew their tendencies and they like to pull the ball a lot and I worked a lot on my off-speed."

Raley, the only left-hander on the Scorpions pitching staff, used his curve ball away numerous times to keep the ball away from the Wildcats' power game. Through a stretch in the middle innings, Raley retired 10 straight batters.

"I was able to locate my off-speed pitches which kept their batters on their back foot," Raley said. "I was able to locate and that's the main thing, to keep the ball down. Our defense played solid. With a pitcher like me who does not have a lot of velocity, I had to keep the ball down and on the ground, and let them make plays."

Saturday's game was the kind of game Aughney was hoping for. "We know we're capable of playing great baseball and this is what we prepared hard for all year."

Center fielder Jorge Camorlinga was the offensive weapon for the Scorpions, going 4-for-4 with four RBIs.

Camorlinga got the Scorpions off on the right foot with a leadoff homer on the first pitch of the game. The game stayed 1-0 until the fifth inning, when the Scorpions added another run.

Robert Mariscal led off the fifth inning with a bad-hop single that glanced off the shoulder of the Wiley second baseman. Mariscal went to second on an errant pickoff attempt, and to third on a wild pitch.

Through a drawn-in infield, Camorlinga singled through the hole at shortstop to give the Scorpions a 2-0 lead.

In the sixth, Gus Henggeler walked, Brian Bustos was hit by a pitch, and Mike Garcia walked to load the bases. Camorlinga came through again with a laser to left-center field, bringing home two runs and giving the Scorpions a 4-0 lead.

The final Scorpion run came on a bizarre play. Matt Warner doubled to left-center field and moved to third when the throw in from left field went between two Wiley infielders. Warner thought about running to home, and ran into Wiley third baseman Edwin Arocho who was in his way. The three umpires conferred, and ruled that Warner be awarded home because of the obstruction at third base, making it 5-0.

Aughney lifted Raley in the eighth in favor of Adam Vera. One Wiley batter reached on the only Scorpion error of the game, but Vera kept the shutout intact by getting the third out on a called strikeout.

In the ninth, reliever Luis Sanchez retired all three batters he faced.
