FORT WORTH -- Texas Wesleyan University scored eight unearned runs in the fifth inning to cruise past UTB/TSC, 17-5, in a Red River Athletic Conference Tournament game matching the tournament's two unbeaten teams at LaGrave Field Monday. Photo Gallery!

The loss drops the Scorpions into an elimination game Tuesday against Bacone College, which eliminated Northwood University, 5-3, Monday night.

Because of rain that fell in Fort Worth that rolled in after the Scorpion game, the tournament schedule was reset. UTB/TSC will play Bacone at 1 p.m. Tuesday, in a game where the winner will advance to the tournament championship game against Texas Wesleyan University and the loser will be eliminated.

TWU will watch the 1 p.m. game to play the winner at 4 p.m.

Although the score was a rout, Monday's game had its drama.
"It was a great game for the start of it, and both teams were hitting," Scorpion head coach Bryan Aughney said. "But everybody is upbeat, and we're ready to go again. Tomorrow is another day and we'll be ready."

UTB/TSC was in this game early before the eight-run uprising. TWU touched Scorpion starter Matt Leffler for two runs in the first inning on Resendez' first homer, before the Scorpions tied it at 2-2 in the bottom of the first on Brian Bustos' two-run bases-loaded single. UTB/TSC left the bases loaded in the inning.

TWU made it 7-2 in the top of the second, with the big blow coming on Resendez' second homer. The Scorpions cut the lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the second on Matt Warner's two-run homer.

Each team scored single runs in the fourth. Jorge Camorlinga had a solo homer for the Scorpions and the game stood at 8-5 at that point.

Following the home run, the Scorpions loaded the bases with one out after a walk to Maldonado, single by Warner, and walk to Ginn. Gus Henggeler then worked the count full to 3-2 and fouled off six pitches. He took a called strike three that Aughney did not agree with, and Ginn was caught too far off first base for a special double play.

That play turned out to be a crucial part of the game.

"Gus had that remarkable 12-pitch at bat, and we had a call that didn't go our way," Aughney said. "Everybody thought it was ball four and Matt got back-doored at first base. We had some steam rollilng in at that time and we left that call affect us the rest of the game."

The disastrous fifth inning that followed started calmly. After a walk and an infield pop out, Justin Keller reached on an error. After the second out in the inning, a walk loaded the bases and Scorpion head coach Bryan Aughney decided to pull Leffler in favor of Adam Vera, who has put out numerous fires in the middle of innings all season.

This time, Vera could not put out the fire. Ryan Jacobi doubled down the right-field line to make it 11-5. Four hits and a walk later, the score was 16-5. All eight runs in the inning were unearned.

Resendez' solo homer in the seventh inning ended the scoring.

Three home runs by Adam Resendez, two early and one late, keyed the Rams' offense. He finished the day going 4-for-5, driving in six runs and scoring four.

The Scorpions made four errors in the game. Luis Sanchez pitched two innings in relief and two other Scorpion position players -- Robert Mariscal and Gilbert Puente -- pitched the eighth and ninth innings, so that Aughney would not have to use regular pitchers.

UTB/TSC had 10 hits in the game, three by Warner who also scored twice. Warner extended his team-record hitting streak to 16 games.

Jorge Camorlinga went 3-for-5 and is now 8-for-14 in the tournament. Brian Bustos also had two hits.

It was a great game for the start of it. Both teams were hitting. We had a call that didn't go our way. 12-pitch at bat, everybody thought it was ball four and we back-doored at first base. We had some steam rollilng in. Give their guy credit. We let that call affect us the rest of the game.

everybody got upbeat, and ready to go after it tomorrow.

At that point, we can't keep burning our pitchers. We got more games left in the game. We got
