Three women's soccer players -- two from the Rocky Mountains and another from Germany -- have signed Red River Athletic Conference Letters of Intent to join the Scorpion women's soccer team.
One of the players -- Vanessa Gallegos, of Cheyenne, Wyo. -- returns to the Scorpions after a two-year absence. Gallegos played for the Scorpions during her freshman season in 2007 and will return for the 2010 campaign as a senior.
Also signing LOIs are Emily Michna of Fort Collins, Colo. and Sara Rosenthal of Morsback, Germany.
"We are delighted to add these three young ladies to our recruiting class," Scorpion head coach Nik Barjaktarevic said. "All three share a winning mentality and each one will bring something unique to our next year's team."
Gallegos, who is a 2007 graduate of Cheyenne East HS, attended Pfeiffer University (N.C.) for the last two seasons. The midfielder, who is an Elementary Education major, scored three goals and had eight assists for the Scorpions during their inaugural 2007 season when they captured their first Red River Athletic Conference championship.
"Vanessa is another well-known face returning to us after playing on first team and helping us secure the conference title in our first season," Barjaktarevic said. "She has great vision on the field, and is great playmaker who can make things happen both with her passing and taking players on going to goal."
Gallegos will be joining former 2007 teammate Aliesha Cassie, who is also returning to the Scorpions after a two-year absence.
"I chose to come back to UTB/TSC because I respect and want to join the coaching philosophy that Coach Nik brings to the team," Gallegos said. "Academically, I feel that with my intended major that I can accomplish all the goals that I have set for myself."
Michna is a graduate of Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins, Colo., and attended Laramie County Community College (Wyo.) for two years. She will be a junior goalkeeper for the Scorpions who plans to major in Engineering Physics or Mechanical Engineering.
"Emily will make the competition for the starting spot next year in goal extremely hard, as she brings a lot of qualities that can make her an immediate impact to the team," Barjaktarevic said. "Getting to know her off the field as well in the recruiting process makes me certain that she will fit in with our team really well."
Jim Gardner, Michna's coach at LCCC, called Emily "a leader on our team. She has an impressive work rate and is fearless in the goal. She reads the game well and helps guide her team so most of her saves are ordinary, but she is very capable of making the "big" save when she needs to. She is outstanding in the classroom and is a wonderful person off the field as well."
Rosenthal is from Morsback, Germany and attended Hollenberg-Gymnasium Waldbroel School. She is a defensive midfielder,
"Sarah is another versatile player we are adding to our roster," Barjaktarevic said. "She can play multiple positions either as a central defender, defensive midfielder, as well as right midfielder and this makes her very valuable to our plans for next season. She is good in the air and adds a very hard working and physical presence on the field and we are very excited to see how she will do in the fall."
