UTB/TSC has been announced as the winner of the 2009-10 Red River Athletic Conference All-Sports Award for the first time in school history.
In the five conference-sponsored sports that UTB/TSC participates in, the Scorpions registered two conference championships and two runner-up finishes in regular season play during this academic year.
UTB/TSC clinched the award with a second-place finish in baseball, which was enough to unseat Northwood University, winner of the last two year's awards. Northwood finished fourth in baseball.
The All-Sports Award is given annually to the RRAC member institution that performs best across the conference's sponsored sports in a given academic year. Points are awarded to the top five teams in each sport and a score for each school is determined as an average across the number of sports in which a school participates.
Conference tournament results are used except in the case of soccer and softball where regular season conference records determine points. The RRAC's 13 member institutions competed in 12 sponsored sports this year.
Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Hilda Silva was ecstatic about receiving the award for the first time.
"It is really very exciting and it seems quite appropriate as it honors the hard work and accomplishments of the entire Athletic program," Silva said. "I am very proud of all our student athletes, our coaching staff and the entire program. They have truly excelled both on and off the field and have taken our program to the next level.
"This has truly been a year of significant accomplishments for our university and our students. We have set in motion a plan that has set a new standard of excellence and I am confident this is only the beginning."
UTB/TSC won championships in men's soccer and volleyball in addition to placing second in women's soccer and baseball. The Scorpions were fourth in their only other sport sponsored by the RRAC -- men's golf. UTB/TSC also has a women's golf program, but the sport is not sponsored by the RRAC because fewer than six institutions participate in the sport.
Although UTB/TSC finished second in women's soccer during the regular season, the Scorpions won the conference tournament and advanced to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
"I extremely proud of our department and each one of our student-athletes who contributed in bringing this great honor to our University," Director of Athletics Todd Lowery said. "This is a testament to the quality and dedication of our coaching staff, and the quality and dedication of the kids they are recruiting in to our programs here at UTB/TSC. We had a remarkable year and I'm very excited for what the future holds for us."
Northwood finished second with titles in four sports (men's and women's cross country, women's soccer and men's track and field). The Knights registered points in all nine of its sports and earned a runner-up finish in men's golf. Northwood was third in softball and women's track.
TWU had a strong spring with championships in baseball, softball and men's golf. The Rams finished third in three other sports.
UTB/TSC has been an RRAC member since the 2006-07 year. Houston Baptist University, which had claimed numerous All-Sports awards, left the RRAC after the 2006-07 school year and is now a member of NCAA Division I.
