LUBBOCK -- Weather has made an impact on the NAIA National Baseball Championship Opening Round, which starts her today, and the tournament has not even started yet.

Mount Marty College had interesting experience on its college bus on its 830-mile trip from Yankton, South Dakota to Lubbock Monday. The team traveled through a hailstorm on Interstate 35 near Oklahoma City, with some hail as big as baseballs.

One hail stone hit the windshield and left a large spider crack on the bus. Two others shattered windows on each side of the bus. The large windows were covered when the team got to Lubbock Monday.

A few parents of Scorpion baseball players have made the trip, Sam Buchanan's father is making a five-hour drive today from Decatur. Jeff Allen's father made it from Houston.

But the bravest award goes to Javier and Nancy Vera, parents of Adam Vera. They drove the 670 miles from Brownsville to Lubbock, arriving at 3 a.m. today.

Some morning coffee was needed.

He has pitched at the Mount Marty College field.

Yankton is located on the banks of the Missouri River that joins Nebraska and South Dakota.

Weather could be a factor in the tournament. Thunderstorms are rumbling throughout Texas, and the chance for rain and thunderstorms increases this afternoon and tonight in the Lubbock area.

There is a chance that the tournament schedule could be altered by inclement weather.
