LUBBOCK -- News and notes from the NAIA National Championship Opening Round Group 4 Tournament from the Scorpions.

The Scorpions have a new mascot. Her name is Grunt, and she is the Scorpions' good-luck charm.

Grunt is a five-year-old German Shepard-Shar pei mix owned by John Buchanan, father of Scorpion pitcher Sam Buchanan.

Mr. Buchanan made the five-hour drive from Decatur to Lubbock to watch Sam and the Scorpions play, and Grunt kept him company in his truck.

Grunt is a rather lazy dog who prefers to lay around in the shade at Hays Field and see how much attention he can get from fans. Otherwise, he sits in the corner of the stands next to the Scorpion dugout.

Grunt also attended the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament in Fort Worth two weeks ago, and Scorpion players Matt Warner and Brian Bustos get some of Grunt's slobber for good luck.

Grunt the dog, the lucky Scorpion baseball mascot
Bustos went up to Grunt, got some of her slobber on his hands, rubbed the slobber on his bat in both games in Lubbock so far. Bustos had hit three home runs in his first two tournament games.

At the RRAC Tournament in Fort Worth, Warner got some of Grunt's slobber and put it on his face. He hit two home runs there.

Jorge Camorlinga is "en fuego." The Scorpion leadoff hitter and centerfielder went 4-for-4 in the 15-5 win over Avila University (Mo.). Two of the hits were infield hits, one in which he beat the throw to first with his speed and another on a surprise bunt single.

In Tuesday's game against Mount Marty College (S.D.), Camorlinga went 2-for-5, making him 6-for-9 in the series.

In six games at the RRAC Tournament in Fort Worth May 1-5, Camorlinga went 18-for-30.

Thus, in eight postseason games, he is now 24-for-39 for a .615 batting average. He has raised his season average to .429.

Camorlinga now has 88 hits for the season and has reached 200 hits for his career. His 88 hits and counting is a Scorpion season record and his 200 and counting is a Scorpion career record.

Camorlinga was awarded the game ball by the team for his 4-for-4 day and 200th hit.
