The first victory of the season is always a good one, no matter the final outcome.

UTB/TSC shut down The University of Houston-Victoria, 2-0, in the Scorpion Soccer Classic at REK Center Field Sunday night with Verena Wonsikowski scoring both goals.

One night after a 1-1 tie with William Carey University, the ninth-ranked team in the NAIA, the Scorpions can now boast a 1-0-1 record.

UTB/TSC dominated the game, although the final score did not show it. The Scorpions took 30 shots, including 12 on goal, compared to only three shots by UHV, none on goal.

"A win is a win, and this was a great way to continue and built on the result we had yesterday against a top 10 team in the country," Scorpion head coach Nik Barjaktarevic said.  "We knew it was a just a matter of time for us to score and the team kept the composure and kept plugging away."

The Scorpions were frustrated in the first half, and did not score until there was 16:26 left in the game when Wonsikowski scored from close range with an assist by Jodie Hunter.

Hunter's corner kick found Chelsea Maidment who then assisted on Wonsikowski's second goal with 6:49 left in the game to make it 2-0.

"Verena scored two important goals for us, but it was really a team effort to get us there at the end," Barjuaktarevic said. "We kept things organized defensively not allowing any shots on goal, and I'm very proud of our team for this."

Jodie Hunter took six shots, Samantha Garcia four, and Wonsikowski, Isadora Freitas and Chelsea Maidment three each. The six shots taken by Freitas and Wonsikowski were on goal.

Emily Michna played the first 45 minutes and Stephanie Reid the final 45 at goalkeeper.

"The most important thing is that the players found the way to win, get two goals, as well as play two games back-to-back early in the season and get the result," Barjaktarevic said. "I'm very impressed with UHV and sure they will surprise a lot of teams this season."

Sarah Saldivar played all 90 minutes at goalkeeper for UHV and had 10 saves. The Jaguars were playing their first two women's soccer game sin history this weekend. UHV lost to William Carey Friday, 5-0.

The Scorpions will hit the road for the first time this year against NCAA Division I Lamar University at 7 p.m. Friday, September 3 in Beaumont.

Lamar has lost its first two games this year by scores of 1-0 to Louisiana Tech University and 2-1 to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
