UTB/TSC Scorpions News
Women's Soccer - 8:30 p.m. Friday, September 3, 2010
BEAUMONT -- Lamar University struck for two goals within a four-minute span in the second half and added another goal later to take a 5-2 win over UTB/TSC in their women's soccer game Friday at the Lamar University Soccer Complex.

Lamar, a member of NCAA Division I's Southland Conference, is now 1-2. The Scorpions are 1-1-1. The game marked the first ever between the two schools in any sport.

"Obviously we're disappointed with the loss," Scorpion head coach Nik Barjaktarevic said.  "I thought we could do a lot better with tough opponents who play physical, fast and put a lot of pressure on us. They had a lot of athleticism."

The Cardinals scored first to take a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute before Linette Cuvillier's goal made it 1-1 in the 12th minute.

The Scorpions took a 2-1 lead on Verena Wonsikowski's goal in the 28th minute, and the Scorpions led at halftime, 2-1.

Lamar tied the game in the 49th minute at 2-2.

With the score tied 2-2, Lamar scored in the 65th minute to make it 3-2 and added another goal four minutes later to go ahead, 4-2. Lamar added its fifth goal in the 80th minute to make it 5-2.

Lamar dominated the statistics, with a 34-9 advantage on shots taken, and a 16-3 advantage on shots on goal.

Scorpion goalkeeper Emily Michna played the first 69 minutes, allowed four goals and had nine saves. Stephanie Reid played the final 21 minutes, allowed one goal and had two saves.

The five goals allowed ties a record for most goal allowed in one game. The Scorpions to Oklahoma Baptist University, 5-1, in 2007 and to Oklahoma City University, 5-0, in 2008.

The matchup against the Scorpions is the only meeting for the Cardinals against an NAIA team.

Conversely, the meeting for the Scorpions against Lamar was the only one on the schedule against an NCAA team.

"Stefany Strickland came in defensively and did a good job for us," Barjaktarevic said. "Looking ahead, this is something we can learn from and hopefully it takes us only one game to do that."

UTB/TSC now has 12 days off before its next game Sept. 16 at Incarnate Word University in San Antonio.
