HOUSTON -- UTB/TSC got on the win column for the first time in three games with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over University of St. Thomas Saturday night.
The Scorpions are now 1-1-1 for the year. They play William Carey University at 2 p.m. here Sunday.
"I was really happy with the second half performance," Scorpion head coach
Dan Balaguero said. "We made several substitutions in the second half and the guys who came off the bench played great."
UST scored in the 25th minute on a 19-yard shot for a 1-0 lead that stood up at halftime.
The Scorpions scored when
Steve Howard delivered a perfect corner kick to
Padraic Ormsby, who hammered it home in the 70th minute to tie the game, 1-1.
In the 81st minute,
Morten Benested took a pass from
Mario Perez and scored from close range to give the Scorpions a 2-1 lead which stood up for the final nine minutes of the game.
Scorpion goalkeeper
Juan Gamboa played all 90 minutes and had three saves. The Scorpions had 11 shots on goal compared to four for UST,
The win was sweet for UTB/TSC, which had a frustrating start to the season in Mississippi last week, when the Scorpions went 0-1-1.
Sunday's game against WCU is a big one.
"We need to re-focus and get ready for tomorrow," Balaguero said. "Tomorrow's game is huge for us."
William Carey University is 1-0-1 after a scoreless tie with St. Thomas on Friday. The Crusaders were 13-4-3 in 2009 and advanced to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round, just as the Scorpions did.
