UTB/TSC Scorpions News
Men's Soccer - 4:50 p.m. Sunday, September 5, 2010
HOUSTON -- UTB/TSC gave up four second-half goals within 20 minutes and dropped a 4-2 decision to William Carey University here Sunday, marking the lowest defensive point in the history of Scorpion men's soccer.

The four goals allowed broke a team record. Only three other opponents had ever scored three goals against the Scorpions, once each in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

UTB/TSC dropped to 1-2-1 for the season, a disappointment after last year's 17-0-2 mark. William Carey is now 2-0-1.

Scorpion head coach Dan Balaguero was extremely disappointed with the Scorpion effort.

"We had a huge meltdown in second half, and the guys stopped playing," Balaguero said. "The experienced players have to step up. There is a huge lack of leadership on the field, a lack of commitment to win 50/50 balls."

UTB/TSC took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute on a 20-yard free kick, a lead that stood up at halftime.

The wheels came off in the second half. WCU scored in the 52nd minute, 59th minute, 63rd minute and 72nd minute to take a 4-1 lead.

The Scorpions scored to make it 4-2 in the 82nd minute on a goal by Jean Paul Piacente, with an assist by Ricky Rodriguez.

UTB/TSC has 11 days off before returning to action Sept. 17-18 at Oklahoma Christian University and Southern Nazarene University.

The Scorpions have one additional road game Sept. 22 to end a seven-game road stretch to start the season. UTB/TSC's first home game is Sept. 25.

"Give credit to William Carey, they were the better side and thoroughly deserved the win.  Individually and collectively we all must get better," Balaguero said.  "While we are all unhappy with the second half,  I still believe we will and improve and end up being where we need to be come late November, we have far to much quality on the roster to perform this way."
