[Women's Golf] Muro Finishes Year with Disappointment and Valuable Experience

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- The 20th Annual NAIA Women's Golf National Championship was a learning experience for freshman golfer Alainey Muro, but she plans to be back in this position again.

Muro shot an eight-over-par 81 Thursday to finish her three-round total with a 242 in the third round of the tournament at Link Hills Country Club. She missed the cut to qualify for Friday's final round; thus her freshman season is over.

But what a year it was Muro. She qualified for the national tournament by cruising to a seven-stroke victory in the NAIA Unaffiliated #3 Tournament, earning her a bid to the national tournament. She tied the school record with her opening-round 71, and broke the school record for best two-round total with a 145. She also earned Red River Athletic Conference Women's Golfer of the Week and NAIA Women's Golfer of the Week honors on May 2.

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Alainey Muro woke up at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday for the earliest tournament tee time in her life -- 7:40 a.m. Eastern time (6:40 Central time) -- but never dreamt of what might happen on the course at the 20th annual NAIA Women's Golf Championship at Link Hills Country Club.

A quadruple-bogey seven on the par-three No. 3 hole dropped her out of contention for the lead. The four-over-par score on this one hole was as exactly what she shot over 18 holes in the first round Tuesday, when she shot a 77.

She finished Wednesday with a 11-over-par 84 and is at 161 for the first 36 holes, which is 15 over par. The score put her in a tie for 72nd place after the first two rounds, 19 shots behind tournament leader Nikki Stewart of Savannah College of Art and Design (Ga.), who has a four-under-par 142.

Pairings for Thursday's third round were announced Wednesday night, and Muro will tee off from the No. 10 hole at 8:58 a.m. EDT (7:58 a.m. Central time) Thursday. The field will be cut to the top 17 teams and top 40 individual players after Thursday for the final round Friday.

Muro will have to improve to 40th place or better by her third round Thursday to advance to Friday's final round. For live tournament scoring, click here.

[Women's Golf] Muro 6 Shots Back of Lead at NAIA National Tournament

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- UTB/TSC freshman golfer Alainey Muro played consistent golf, shooting two-over-par on each side for a four-over-par 77 in the first round of the 20th Annual NAIA Women's Golf National Championships at Link Hills Country Club here Tuesday.

Muro, who started the day late in the day on the No. 10 hole, had a two-over-par 38 on the back nine. She then had a two-over-par 39 on the front nine. She had 18 pars, seven bogeys and three birdies on the day.

Her 77 score puts her in an 11-way tie for 38th place in the 144-player field. She is six shots off the lead shared by Jessica McPhee of Thomas University (Ga.) and Pauline Shoop of Shorter University (Ga.), both of whom shot two-under-par 71 scores.

Tuesday is the last day of spring final exams for UTB/TSC students, but Alainey Muro is just starting her last major test.

The freshman from McAllen High School will be playing in the 20th Annual NAIA Women's Golf National Championship, starting Tuesday at Link Hills Country Club in Greenville, Tenn.

And she's taking this test just as seriously as she would any other exam in an academic setting.

"I'm on a mission," Muro said. "I've been working hard. I'm pretty positive that I'm going to play well."

Alainey Muro of UTB/TSC will be in the second-to-last group to tee off Tuesday in the first round of the 20th Annual National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Women's Golf National Championships at Link Hills Country Club in Greenville, Tenn.

Muro will tee off at 2:20 p.m. EDT (1:20 p.m. Central Time) Tuesday from the #10 tee. She qualified as an individual by winning medalist honors at the NAIA Unaffiliated #3 Tournament in Oklahoma City April 24.

Muro will be one of four individuals playing among the field of 144, which includes 28 teams of five players each and four individuals like Muro.

For Wednesday's second round, the field will be reversed. Muro will tee off at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday from the No. 1 tee.

[Women's Soccer] Eight More Women's Soccer Players Sign RRAC Letters of Intent

Seven international players are among the eight newest to sign Red River Athletic Conference Letters of Intent to join the UTB/TSC women's soccer team.

The new group is expected to bolster an already-strong team that went 17-3-1 in 2011 and captured the Red River Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships.

Every year our recruiting class gets better and better," head coach Nik Barjaktarevic said. "With the experience and quality of players returning, I am very thrilled about the new season. This is definitely the most experience and versatile class we've ever had."

After signing Fernanda Baena from McAllen Rowe High School Wednesday, Barjaktarevic had commitments from eight more players -- two from Norway, two from Switzerland, and one each from Colombia, The Netherlands, Paraguay and the United States. Three have national team experience.

Michael Fasci from Edinburg High School signed a Red River Athletic Conference Letter of Intent Thursday to join the UTB/TSC men's golf team, and was the first recruit to sign for the upcoming 2012 season.

Two three-day volleyball camps for youth ages 9 to 18 are scheduled in July at the Manuel Garza B. Gymnasium, as part of the UTB/TSC Student Affairs Pre-College Summer Camp Series.

"We have had outstanding camps in the past and we are looking forward to make improvements that will provide the best possible experience for athletes of all ages," said camp director Roberta Santos, assistant volleyball coach.

Both camps are designed to teach the mechanics of excellent fundamental volleyball skills. The camp will also progress to team and game situations. Participants will be given the opportunity to improve individual skills, team concepts, and competitiveness in a fun and positive environment.

SHREVEPORT, La. -- The drama was intense.

It was to be good or bad news either way after the game. One team would be celebrating a spot in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round and the other team would see its season come to an end.

Bacone College held off a bases loaded rally in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull out a 4-2 victory over UTB/TSC in a Red River Athletic Conference Tournament game Monday night Pilot Field.

The last season in UTB/TSC Scorpion baseball history ends with a 30-26 record. The baseball program has been suspended.

Bacone (28-22) advances to play unbeaten Louisiana State University-Shreveport for the tournament championship at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Top-ranked Louisiana State University-Shreveport knocked off UTB/TSC, 11-5, in a meeting of the only teams unbeaten in the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Scorpions (30-25) will now play an elimination game at 6:30 p.m. Monday against the winner of the Texas College-Bacone College game, that is scheduled to start at 3:20 p.m.

LSU-S is the No. 1 team in the NAIA with a record of 47-4. The Pilots have won 12 straight and 28 of their last 29 games.

The top two teams in the tournament qualify for the NAIA National Championship Opening Round May 10-14. The winner of Monday morning's game will advance to the tournament championship Tuesday and qualify for nationals.

[Baseball] Scorpions Pull Out Dramatic 10-9 Win over Steers in 10 Innings

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Zach Cordia's sacrifice fly scored Scott Frazier for the game-winning run in the 10th inning over Texas College, 10-9, in their Red River Athletic Conference Tournament second-round game Sunday at Pilot Field.

UTB/TSC now plays Louisiana State University-Shreveport at 11:30 a.m. Monday in a meeting of the tournament's last two unbeaten teams. Texas College plays Bacone College at 3 p.m. Monday in an elimination game.

The Scorpions have played nine straight one-run games against a conference opponent. UTB/TSC, which held off Texas Wesleyan University Saturday by a 4-3 score, is 4-5 in those games.

The win marked the third straight year that head coach Bryan Aughney has won 30 games. UTB/TSC is now 30-24 while Texas College, which had an eight-game winning streak snapped, is 27-23-1.
