[Baseball] Scorpions Split Twinbill with Jaguars Again; Storm Stops 2nd Game

A wild afternoon that featured a seven-rally that fell short by one run and a thunderstorm that ended the day highlighted a doubleheader split between UTB/TSC and The University of Houston-Victoria Saturday afternoon at Scorpion Field.

UHV won the opener, 9-8, surviving a wild rally by the Scorpions, who won the second game, 6-2, on a strong pitching performance by Adam Vera. The second game was scheduled for nine innings but called with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning because of thunderstorms that rolled through Brownsville at about 4:30 p.m.

UTB/TSC, which won three of four games from Doane College (Neb.) Jan. 23-25, split the series with UHV, 2-2. On Friday, the Scorpions won the opener, 9-0, but lost the nightcap, 7-4.

The Scorpions are now 5-3 for the season. UHV was playing its first games of the year and is 2-2.

"On Friday, Rory (Young) pitched great and the offense showed up," Scorpion head coach Bryan Aughney said. "In the second game, Marcos did a great job to start the game, but the bullpen did not do a good job. In the first game today, our offense got started really late. We can't sit around and wait for things to happen. In the second game, Adam pitched well and we hit well. We're not cashing in enough runners in scoring position. We've got to get better in pressure situations."

UTB/TSC begins Red River Athletic Conference play Feb. 10-11 at Scorpion Field with a three-game series against Southwestern Assemblies of God University. It will be the last three games of a stretch of 11 straight home games to start the 2012 season for the Scorpions.

The Scorpions are now 4-2 for the year while the Jaguars are 1-1.

The University of Houston-Victoria, the team that has played UTB/TSC in baseball more than any other in the NAIA era, returns for a four-game series against the Scorpions Friday and Saturday at Scorpion Field.

Doubleheaders are scheduled at 4 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday. The opener each day is scheduled for seven innings, and the nightcap games will be nine innings. Game 1 Live Stats! Game 2 Live Stats! Live Audio/Video!

UTB/TSC and UH-V have met 30 times since 2008, with the Jaguars holding a 17-13 series advantage. The Scorpions won five of the eight meetings in 2011, including a four-game sweep at Scorpion Field.

Saturday was a good day for Scorpion baseball.

Juan Munoz and Brad Regehr came through in the clutch with run-scoring hits in the first game and Adam Vera turned in an outstanding complete game pitching performance in the second game to pace UTB/TSC to a 4-3, 7-2 doubleheader sweep over Doane College (Neb.) Saturday at Scorpion Field.

"Overall, it was an outstanding weekend by our pitching staff," Scorpion head coach Bryan Aughney said. "They threw great in all four games. You can't ask for anything more than that. Even in the one we lost, Marcos (de Leon) gave up three unearned runs."

The first three games between the Scorpions and Tigers, both of whom received votes in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 poll, were one-run games. UTB/TSC won the opener Thursday, 1-0, and Doane won Friday's game, 3-2. Saturday's second game was a one-run game until the sixth inning, when the Scorpions broke the game open.

"We played very clean defensively all weekend," Aughney said. "We made a couple of errors here and there, but they didn't cost us. Offensively, we got things going in the final game and scored some runs. Doane is a very good team and has very good pitching. It was well-played baseball. We're excited to come out of there 3-1. We have some work to do and we understand that, and we're ready to get after it and get on with the season."

Doane College (Neb.) scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning and held on for a 3-2 win over UTB/TSC Friday night at Scorpion Field.

[Baseball] Scorpions Get Great Pitching in 1-0 Win over Doane College

Rory Young and Kale Wierenga combined for a two-hit shutout as UTB/TSC edged Doane College (Neb.), 1-0, in the season opener for both teams Thursday night at Scorpion Field.

The Scorpions and Tigers resume their four-game series with a single game at 6 p.m. Friday at Scorpion Field. The teams complete the series with a doubleheader at 12 noon Saturday.

Nursing a 1-0 lead, Young held Doane hitless through the first six innings before Albert Thomas singled in the top of the seventh. He was relieved by Cale Wierenga, who also allowed a hit in the seventh. But Wierenga got out of the jam and pitched two scoreless innings to earn the save.

UTB/TSC begins its 2012 season at 6 p.m. Thursday at Scorpion Field against Doane College (Neb.), a team it faced in the 2011 NAIA National Championship Opening Round.

The game is the second to be played at the collegiate level anywhere in the United States in 2012. The first was played at Point Loma University (Calif.) in San Diego Wednesday. NCAA schools do not begin play until February.

[Baseball] Season Outlook: Expectations Are High for Scorpion Baseball Team

Each year since joining the NAIA since 2007, the UTB/TSC baseball team has improved on its record from the previous year.

With five years of progress, expectations are as high as they have ever been for the Scorpions in 2012.

Under head coach Bryan Aughney, the Scorpions have posted winning records in the last two seasons, reaching the NAIA National Championship Opening Round both times. After a 28-31 record in 2009, the Scorpions went 31-24 in 2010 and 35-26 in 2011.

Aughney starts his fourth season with a 94-81 record (.537), six wins shy of his 100th victory as a head coach.

With nine seniors on a 32-man roster and a group of impressive recruits, the Scorpions could make some serious noise in the Red River Athletic Conference, where they have finished second two straight years.

"Three years ago we were still finding our way," Aughney said. "But the progress we have made and what we have built would not be possible without those teams that used grit and determination to play the way they did – that has now led us to this season. Our goals remain the same - number one we want a conference championship, then go into the national tournament playing our best baseball and be the last team standing."

UTB/TSC won two scrimmage baseball games over Laredo Community College, 14-11 and 4-2, Sunday at Scorpion Field in the final preparation games for the Scorpions before the start of the regular season Thursday.

The Scorpions won all four scrimmage games over the Palominos. On Saturday, UTB/TSC won both games by scores of 4-0 and 4-3.

Rory Young, Marcos De Leon and Salvador Villalpando combined for a no-hitter and struck out 18 alumni as the 2012 UTB/TSC Scorpions waltzed to a 14-2 win over the Alumni Friday at Scorpion Field.

The 2012 Scorpions will play Laredo Community in four scrimmage games this weekend, with doubleheaders scheduled at 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. UTB/TSC opens the regular season with a four-game series against Doane College (Neb.) Jan. 26-28, starting with a single game at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26.

Twenty-six former players who played at Texas Southmost College or UTB/TSC as Scorpions participated, including Oscar Gallegos, who was a member of the 1979 Scorpion squad.

Young pitched the first four innings, struck out seven and walked one. He allowed two unearned runs in the first inning when Tony Lerma's fly ball to left field was misplayed, and two runs scored.

De Leon went the next four innings, striking out nine and walking two. Villalpando pitched the ninth inning, and struck out two of the three batters he faced.

Scorpion hitters collected 12 hits, two each by Peter Maldonado, Colby Henscey, Joel Fernandez, Robert Mariscal, and Scott Frazier. Henscey drove in five runs, Mariscal four and Fernandez three. Henscey and Zach Cordia scored three times each.

[Volleyball] Volleyball Team Celebrates National Championship with Fans

It was a "Good Time" one more time.

About 200 people celebrated with the UTB/TSC volleyball team, which captured the 2011 NAIA Volleyball National Championship last month, Friday at Manuel Garza B. Gymnasium.

The highlight of the evening came when the Grupo Folklorico Tizatlan dancers led the crowd to the line dance "Good Time" by Alan Jackson. Many of the fans joined in, including the Scorpions and UTB/TSC president Dr. Juliet V. Garcia.

[Men's Soccer] Former Scorpion Evans Drafted to Chicago Fire of MLS

Evans Frimpong, a member of the undefeated 2009 UTB/TSC men's soccer team, was drafted by the Chicago Fire Soccer Club of the Major League Soccer (MLS) Wednesday, becoming the first former Scorpion to be drafted by a professional team.

Frimpong, a native of Accra, Ghana who was on the 2008 roster as a redshirt freshman, was selected to the 2009 Red River Athletic Conference All-Conference team as a forward.

He scored eight goals and led the Scorpions and the RRAC with 13 assists, a mark that was eighth best nationally that year. His average of 0.72 assists per game was ranked sixth nationally.

Frimpong also led the Scorpions in shots with 59 and shots on goal with 25.

[Volleyball] NAIA Volleyball National Championship Celebration Set Friday

Scorpion fans are invited to celebrate with the NAIA 2011 Volleyball National Champions at a celebration event at 5 p.m. Friday at Manuel Garza B. Gymnasium.

The Scorpion Volleyball National Championship Celebration will feature members of the 2011 Scorpions, who captured the NAIA Women's Volleyball National Championship Dec. 3 in Sioux City, Iowa.

Special presentations include a performance by the UTB/TSC Drumline, which provided entertainment during Scorpion home volleyball matches; and by UTB/TSC student Nestor AnDress Trevino, brother of Scorpion senior Anayeli Trevino. A video tribute featuring highlights of the national championship will also be shown.

[Baseball] Scorpions Host Alumni in Annual Baseball Exhibition Game Friday

A large contingent of former baseball players, including 1979 standout Oscar Gallegos, are expected to participate in the annual Alumni Baseball Game at 6 p.m. Friday at Scorpion Field.

Former Scorpions, including several from the 2011 team, have committed to participate. Traditionally, players who have played as early as the 1970s for Texas Southmost College have participated. Gallegos has played in the game numerous times, and had a single in his only plate appearance in 2011.

Gallegos' hit came off former Scorpion pitcher Julian Moya, who is one of several players from the 2011 team expected to participate. Others include catchers Jeff Allen and Gilberto Puente, pitchers Danny Gidora, outfielders Jorge Camorlinga and Matt Warner.

Alumni are encouraged to arrive at Scorpion Field by 4 p.m. for a 40-minute batting practice from 4:20-5 p.m.
