Scorpion Soccer Camps for boys and girls are scheduled this summer for youth ages 4 to 17 at the Brownsville Sports Park.

The camps will provide participants the incredible opportunity to spend time with UTB/TSC head men's soccer Coach Dan Balaguero and women's head coach Nik Barjaktarevic, who are among the most respected college coaches around the country.

The program will provide recreational players a total instructional program with fun and exercise and learn from the best.  The camps will help participants gain new skills and make new friends.

Six student-athletes took part in a rewarding experience as volunteers in the Brownsville Independent School District Special Olympics Local Games Saturday at Sams Memorial Stadium.
 
Baseball players Peter Maldonado and Juan Munoz, men's soccer players Steve Howard and Chris Scott, and women's soccer players Carling Rootes and Theresa Berman were involved in important activities in the awards area for the Special Olympians upon finishing their races in preparation for their awards.
 
More than 400 BISD students participated in the meet. There were more than 100 volunteers.
 
Upon the completion of more than 60 events, the student-athletes received the award recipients. They organized them for the gold, silver and bronze medals for the top three finishers, and ribbons for those who finished in fourth, fifth and sixth places.

Former Scorpion soccer midfielder James McCarron has accepted a position as Assistant Fitness Coach of the Seattle Sounders FC, a member of the Major League Soccer (MLS).

McCarron reports to the Sounders next week and will be with the team until mid-August.

McCarron, a native of Skegness, England, played for the Scorpions during their inaugural 2007 season and was co-captain of the 2008 team. UTB/TSC won the Red River Athletic Conference championship both seasons, as well as 2009.

McCarron, who holds a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certificate, could not pass the chance to start on the career path he hopes to take.

AUSTIN -- Scorpion head men's soccer coach Dan Balaguero placed seventh in the Austin Marathon Saturday, which was the second marathon he has run.
 
Balaguero finished the 26.2 mile race with a time of 2:40.49, 20 minutes behind winner Keith Pierce of Cedar Park. Balaguero's time was good for second place among runners in the 35-39 age group.
  
The Austin marathon attracted a field of 3,949 runners.

Question: How could a team go undefeated during a season and not win the national championship?
 
Answer: When the team ties another team, which goes down in the record books as a tie, and then falls short on penalty kicks.
 
That's exactly what happened to the UTB/TSC men's soccer team in 2009.
