Ronnie Zamora

Ronnie Zamora is serving as Director of Sports Information, a position held from September 2006 to May 2009, and again since September 2009. He was the first SID hired when UTB/TSC joined the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in 2006.

 

He has worked at UTB/TSC since 1990, the first two years as Director of Public Information for Texas Southmost College before the establishment of the UTB/TSC partnership in 1992. From 1992-2006, he served as Director of Publications at UTB/TSC, where he was responsible for all official University publications and the official university website's home page.

 

As the Sports Information Director, Zamora attends Scorpion home athletics events, and manages game operations relating to announcing, music, entertainment, scoreboard operation, and official computer and paper game statistics. He is the primary writer for stories on the Scorpion Athletics website, and is responsible for the website's maintenance.

 

Zamora has served as the broadcast voice for the Scorpions, announcing athletics postseason competitions since 1995 on the radio and Internet in volleyball, soccer, and baseball.

 

During his role as Director of Publications, Zamora assisted the Office of Intercollegiate Athletics when the Scorpions competed in the NJCAA with media relations, game announcing, and other game management tasks. He moved into the full-time role on the same day the Scorpions joined the NAIA. 

 

Prior to joining UTB/TSC, Zamora worked as Public Information Officer for the Brownsville Independent School District from 1986-1990. He worked at The Brownsville Herald for six years prior to that, from 1980-82 as Sports Editor and from 1982-86 as Assistant Managing Editor.

 

He also worked as Sports Editor at The Herald from 1972-75, as sports writer and Sports Editor at The Daily Texan in Austin from 1975-77, as Sports Editor of the Valley Morning Star in Harlingen from 1977-79, and as sports writer at the San Antonio Light in 1979 and 1980.

 

He started his tenure as Sports Editor at The Herald when he was 18 years old and attending Texas Southmost College, where he was Editor of The Collegian student newspaper in 1974-75.

 

Zamora was born and grew up in Brownsville, and graduated from Brownsville High School in 1972. He received an Associate in Arts degree from TSC in 1975, a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin in May 1978, and a Master of Education degree in Educational Technology from UTB/TSC in 2004.

 

Zamora is member of numerous UTB/TSC campus committees. He serves critical roles coordinating logistics for major University events and activities, including Commencement.

  

Zamora is a member of Lord of Divine Mercy Parish, where he is the Liturgical Ministry Coordinator. He has served on the boards at St. Mary's Catholic School, West Brownsville Little League and is a past chair of the board and member of Leadership Brownsville Inc. He is past chair of the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame and still serves on the RGVSHOF Board of Directors.

 

He received the Leadership Brownsville Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2005 and the South Cameron County American Heart Association Crystal Heart Award in 2009 for community service and volunteerism. He has been inducted in the 2010 Class of the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame.

 

Around the community and the Rio Grande Valley, Zamora has served as announcer and Master of Ceremonies for numerous public events and sports activities, including football, basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, swimming, and Special Olympics. He is active with the American Heart Association Heart Walk and was the Chairman of the 2007 Heart Walk.

 

He was also the play-by-play voice for the University of Texas-Pan American men's and women's basketball home games from 2000-02 for the Valley's FOX television affiliate on a tape-delayed basis. He was editor and publisher of SportsBeat, a monthly sports newspaper that was published in Brownsville in 1991 and 1992.

 

He has also served as announcer for swim meets in Corpus Christi and Austin.

 

He is a current member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and is a past member of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
